THANKSGIVING Reflections and Prayer - November 27, 2014

Exactly ten years ago near the end of a Twenty-two day tour of New Zealand and Australia, Dianne and I celebrated Thanksgiving just miles from Australia's Great Barrier Reef. During our trip we traveled by Bus, Plane, Train, and Boat with people of many races, religions, cultures, backgrounds and aspirations.

We crossed the International Date Line and the Equator. We visited Cook Mountain where we could look down into the clouds. We celebrated the Māori, the Aborigine, and all people of the region. We visited Sacred Aborigine lands including Aires Rock. We Dined in the Desert. We got up close with the Kangaroo, the Koala Bear, and from a distance viewed the Dingo and other things with sharp teeth. We enjoyed a Thanksgiving Dinner prepared by a Chef who had never cooked a Thanksgiving Dinner, and it was served in a country that does not celebrate the Holiday. While in Sydney, I addressed a meeting of the Australian Investors including a delegation from China. Truly, barriers fell and hope rose!

As we reflect this Thanksgiving on the astounding, the amazing, the memorable; our sincere wish and prayer is that today we will all be grateful for those in our midst and prayerful for others (the seen, unseen, the known, the unknown); and that we might be able to make a friend, and forgive an enemy. This world is in desperate need of healing, and it can start now.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

East Cleveland Public Library will be hosting the Inaugural Shirellda Helen Terry Memorial Women’s Safety Summit to commemorate the anniversary of the Dedication Ceremony of the Shirellda Helen Terry Teen Department. Ms. Terry was a local teen who was found murdered in July 2013 in the East Cleveland area and a frequent patron of the East Cleveland Public Library. This Women’s Safety Summit, which is presented in her memory, seeks to empower women and provide safety training. This free event will be held on Saturday, November 15 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm in the Greg L. Reese Performing Arts Center, 14101 Euclid Avenue, East Cleveland, OH 44112.

The Inaugural Shirellda Helen Terry Memorial Women’s Safety Summit will include a panel on Domestic Violence, which features facilitator Lori Ingram, writer and columnist, who has been a victim of domestic violence and violence against women; Laura Cowan, domestic violence intervention expert; and Edna Sutton, domestic violence survivor who was paralyzed by her captor when she attempted to leave. Panel members will be available to answer questions and provide insight and inspiration.

A Discussion on Gender Violence Against Women will be presented by Bellefaire JCB and Case Western Reserve University’s Social Justice Institute. Dr. Mary Ellen Dale of Bellefaire JCB and Dr. Rhonda Williams of Case Western Reserve University will speak on the different types of gender violence that women experience.

To close out the Inaugural Shirellda Helen Terry Memorial Women’s Safety Summit, Grandmaster Ray Szuch of the Cleveland Academy of Self-Defense will present a Women’s Self Defense and Survival Course. Szuch is a three-time Emmy-winning producer and stunt coordinator for CBS’s Crime Stoppers Case Files.

Lunch for all participants will be included to allow for the conversations and discussions to continue. Immediately following lunch, Belinda Minor, Shirellda Helen Terry's mother, will participate in a question and answer session facilitated by Lori Ingram.

It is a safe space where women in business can share their hopes, dreams, challenges, disappointments, successes and breakthroughs and be celebrated, supported, educated, and empowered to keep walking on their own path to personal fulfillment and economic empowerment! If you don't have your ticket yet, ask yourself: What's holding me back from saying YES to my possibilities? How much longer will I sit on the sidelines instead of taking a risk and being a contender in my own life? The #PTIO2014 experience just might be the shift you need to soar to a new place!
