True joy is an attitude of gratefulness
I am honored to be in a family of people
Who are passionate about helping others
If serving others is beneath you
Then Leadership is beyond you

It is always “The other Guy” . . . until it is YOU!

As we attempt to distance ourselves from the plight of those who are in any way different than ourselves, I pray that we remember, reflect upon and consider the wisdom of these words:

”First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.”

Niemöller

Please note: The quotation stems from Niemöller's lectures during the early postwar period. Different versions of the quotation exist. These can be attributed to the fact that Niemöller spoke extemporaneously and in a number of settings.

Geography has made us neighbors. History has made us friends. Economics has made us partners, and necessity has made us allies. Those whom God has so joined together, let no man put asunder.

He who is different from me does not impoverish me - he enriches me. Our unity is constituted in something higher than ourselves - in Man... For no man seeks to hear his own echo, or to find his reflection in the glass.

If man is to survive, he will have learned to take a delight in the essential differences between men and between cultures. He will learn that differences in ideas and attitudes are a delight, part of life's exciting variety, not something to fear.

Never judge someone by the way he looks
Or a book by the way it's covered;
For inside those tattered pages,
There's a lot to be discovered.

If we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity. For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal.

[Commencement Address at American University, June 10 1963]

To those who can . . .
PLEASE VOTE!
. . . because we cannot:
Medgar Evers. Michael Schwerner, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Rev. James Rebb, Viola Luiiuzzo, 4 little girls in a Birmingham Church, the other 109 victims of the Civil Rights Movement identified at the Civil Rights Memorial (and the ones not listed), the over  2,882,000 U.S. Military Veterans who died at war, the thousands who have died in support of workers’ rights, and all others who died supporting the belief that we all have value.

Veterans Day and The Vote

We are approaching Veterans Day and preparing to honor those who truly helped make this country great by keeping the peace, and contributing to our communities by giving back their energy, time, and talent.  It is fitting that we take this opportunity to extend a thank you to our friend Roy Richardson and all Veterans.  Roy is pictured below with autographs of fellow Airmen including legendary Lt. Colonel Clarence C. Jamison of the famed Tuskegee Airmen.
_

We urge you to VOTE on November 8th to help insure that this nation continues to live up to the principles of freedom and equality, regardless of the heritage of its citizens.
